Traditionally handed down from father to son, with the words “My son, I give you the four corners of the world because one cannot know where one will die”. Symbolically the four points mark the edges of the world, ensuring that father and son could never be lost to one another. HAND OF FATIMA

The Hamsa / Hand of Fatima motif encompasses numerous cultures and civilisations across the North Africa, the Middle East. From ancient Mesopotamia, a symbol affiliated with Inanna or Ishtar protecting against disease to Phoenician and Cartaginian cultures, again symbolising protection along with fertility and divine blessing. Ancient Egypt the Mano Pantea (hand of the all-goddess) it was protective as well as in Berber cultures - the traditional tafust (hand) used both for protection and blessing. The Leventine Christians adopted the sybol as the Hand of Mary, invoking the Virgin’s protection whilst in Jewish tradition, Hand of Miriam amulets symbolised God’s strong hand. In Islamic tradition, the Hand of Fatima is named after the prophet’s daughter Fatima al-Zahra. The five fingers refer to the Five Pillars of Islam whilst the amulet protects against the evil eye.

Revered by the Egyptians, imbued with symbolism and meaning, the Ankh - Key of Life, represents eternal life and immortality. The Ankh symbol played a crucial role in ancient Egyptian culture as a sacred hieroglyph for "life" and an amulet symbolising immortality and everlasting life. The Ankh bridged human life with the divine and the hereafter and the motif can be seen adorning the tombs throughout ancient Egypt.

YEMENI MOON

The Yemeni Moon Talisman pendant is based on an early 20th century Yemeni silver pendant depicting an Islamic blessing and religious phrases, common of the late Ottoman period. The beautiful crescent from with filigree edging was worn as a protective adornment by the women of Yemen. Yemen was Sally’s home in her late teens and the women’s jewellery adornment became pivotal in her study of anthropology and jewellery from that point forwards.
